Extinguishing Media:  Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding material and type of fire.

Special Firefighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Fumes from fire are hazardous.  Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire & Explosion:  May emit toxic fumes of hydrogen chloride and silver oxide if involved in a fire.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of silver chloride have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

The absorption of silver compounds into the circulation and the subsequent deposition of the reduced silver in various tissues of the body may result in the production of a generalized greyish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes - a condition known as argyria.  The introduction of fine particles of silver through breaks in the skin produces a local pigmentation at the site of the injury.  These compounds may be irritating to the skin and mucous  membranes. Chlorides vary widely.  Sodium chloride (table salt) has very low toxicity, while carbonyl chloride (phosgene) is lethal in small doses  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials).

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system.

Ingestion:  May cause gastrointestinal disturbances.

Skin:  May cause irritation.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause bronchitis, kidney injury, and argyria (permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin, conjunctivae, and internal organs).

Ingestion:  May cause kidney injury and argyria.

Skin:  Repeated exposure can cause permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin.  Repeated skin contact with silver compounds has been found to cause allergic reactions in a few apparently sensitive persons, including (skin inflammation) and hypersensitivity.

Eye:  Repeated exposure can cause permanent blue-gray discoloration of the eyes.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory and skin disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. 

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

 

 

IV.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable if used and stored according to specifications.

Conditions to Avoid:  Light, extreme heat.  Exposure to light slowly releases silver and chlorine (accumulation of chlorine in an enclosed space could be hazardous to person entering area: highly irritating and corrosive to tissues).

Incompatibilities (Materials to Avoid):  Aluminum, ammonium hydroxide, bromine trifluoride, alkali metals, sodium peroxide-charcoal, acetylene.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Hydrogen chlorides.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

 

 

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Scoop or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with State, Federal and Local regulations.

 

 

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator when high concentrations are present.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentrations at or below PEL/TLV.  Handle in a controlled atmosphere.  General exhaust in not recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves.

Eye protection:  Safety goggles.

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Avoid breathing dust. Use in well ventilated area.  Avoid contact with eyes.  Do not wear contact lenses.  Avoid contact with skin, especially when cracked or irritated.  Keep work area as dust-free as possible.  Store in a cool dry place, keep tightly sealed when not in use.  Protect from exposure to light.

Other Precautions:  Can ignite or explode on contact with incompatible substances; aluminum, ammonium hydroxide, bromine trifluoride, alkali metals, sodium peroxide-charcoal.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
