11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Acute and Chronic Effects:
Germanium Compounds: In humans, chronic ingestion of elixirs containing germanium compounds in doses significantly exceeding the estimated average dietary intake has resulted in acute renal dysfunction or failure, including 2 deaths. Germanium compounds administered at high doses has been shown to produce some toxic effects in experimental animals. Animal studies to detect mutagenicity, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity did not produce any positive evidence. Single subcutaneous injections of neutralized germanium dioxide at doses of 150 to 600 mg/kg produced no evidence of local tissue damage or systemic toxicity; nor ... repeated weekly doses of 50 mg/kg in young rats. Germanium dioxide was rapidly excreted and in moderately large doses produced no damage in inhalation experiments.
