IV.   FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS DATA

Flash Point:  N/A

Autoignition Temperature:  N/A

Flammable LimitsLower:  N/A      Upper:  N/A

Extinguishing Media:  Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding materials and type of fire.

Special Firefighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:  Material may emit toxic fumes if involved in a fire.  On heating at 300 oC in air, oxidation proceeds incandescently.  The oxide ignites in nitrous oxide at 400 oC, and incandesces when heated in sulfur dioxide.

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of tin oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Tin metal dust/fumes and inorganic tin compounds may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation and pneumoconiosis.  Most inorganic tin compounds are poorly absorbed by the body when ingested or inhaled.

Acute and Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  Respiratory irritant.  Sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, headache and bronchitis may occur.

Ingestion:  No data

Skin:  Irritating; redness and inflammation possible.

Eye:  Irritating; redness, watering and inflammation possible.

Other:  Elemental tin is not generally considered toxic.  Some inorganic tin salts are irritating and can liberate toxic fumes on decomposition.  Dust of tin oxides have caused a pneumoconiosis, which is relatively benign.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Respiratory disorders

Routes of Entry:  Inhalation, Skin, and Ingestion

Carcinogenicity:  None    NTP:  No     IARC Monographs:  No    OSHA Regulated:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 cups of water or milk, induce vomiting and seek medical attention.

SKIN:  Brush material off skin, wash area with soap and water and seek medical attention.

EYES:  Flush eyes with lukewarm water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Heat and incompatible materials

Incompatibles:  Strong acids, strong bases, oxidizing agents, non-metal oxides

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Sn, SnO2

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.  Isolate the area where the spill occurred and insure proper ventilation is available.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency unit and place in a container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  Wear NIOSH-approved dust-mist-fume cartridge respirator when high concentrations are present.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain exposure below TLV.  General exhaust is recommended.  Handle in a controlled atmosphere.

Protective Gloves:  Neoprene

Eye Protection:  Safety Glasses

Other Protective Equipment:  Wear Protective clothing to prevent contamination of skin and clothes.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storing:  Store in tightly closed container in a cool, dry place.  Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before meals.  Store away from oxidizing agents.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.

Transportation Requirements:

DOT Class:  Not Classified

UN Number:  N/C

IMCO Class:  N/C

TSCA:  Listed in the EPA TSCA Inventory
