Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: In case of fire strontium iodide may emit toxic hydrogen iodide and/or metal oxide fumes.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of strontium iodide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Strontium compounds have a low order of toxicity.  It is chemically and biologically similar to calcium.  The oxides and hydroxides are moderately caustic materials (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).

Prolonged exposure to iodides may cause skin rash, running nose, headache and irritation of the mucous membranes.  In severe cases the skin may show pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters.  Iodides are readily diffused across the placenta.

Acute and Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  STRONG IRRITANT.  May cause irritation of the upper respiratory system and nose, lacrimation, headache, and tight chest.

Ingestion:  STRONG IRRITANT.  May cause chemical burns to the mouth, gastric irritation, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Skin:  STRONG IRRITANT.

Eye:  STRONG IRRITANT.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pneumonoconiosis.

Ingestion: May cause gastritis, degeneration of the liver and kidneys, growth retardation, anemia and spasms.

Skin: May cause rashes, pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters.

Eye: May cause visual impairment, including blindness.

Target Organs:  May affect the respiratory system, liver, kidneys, skin and eyes.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory, skin and gastric disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air.  Keep warm and quiet.  Give oxygen if breathing is difficult.  Seek immediate medical attention.

INGESTION:  Do not induce vomiting.  Seek immediate medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove any contaminated clothing.  Brush material off skin.  Wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention.

EYES:  Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention.

 

 

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid):  Water/moisture, acids, oxidizing agents.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Hydrogen iodide, metal oxide fume.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear full protective clothing and respiratory protection specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Scoop or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with all applicable Federal, State and Local regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  Wear NIOSH-approved dust-mist-fume respirator.

Ventilation:  Handle in a drybox, in an inert gas such as argon, to prevent contact with moisture.  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration below exposure levels.  General exhaust is not recommended.

Eye Protection:  OSHA approved safety goggles

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves

Other Protective Equipment:  Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Handle and store under dry protective gas.  Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place.  Wash hands and face throughly after handling and before meals.  Store in well ventilated area.

Other Precautions: Store under dry, inert gas.  Protect from exposure to light.  Protect from humidity and water.  Do not store together with acids.  Do not store together with oxidizing agents.  Store in the dark.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
