Unusual Fire & Explosion:  Material may emit toxic fumes of thallium oxide when heated to decomposition.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

When ingested, thallium can cause a metallic taste in the mouth, garlic odor of the breath, gingivitis, inflammation of the mouth and/or tongue, salivation, excessive thirst, jaundice and diarrhea.  All routes of entry may produce the following symptoms due to thallium poisoning: loss of hair, hair discoloration, dystrophy of fingernails with horizontal white bands, tachycandia, swelling of the feet and legs, joint pain, vomiting, insomnia, hypersensitivity of hands and feet, mental confusion, polynueritis, partial leg paralysis, nephritis, wasting and weakness, loss of appetite, severe pain in calves of legs, slowed reflexes, optic nueritis, albuminuria, eosiniphilia and  lymphocytosis.  Thallium is highly toxic and a cumulative poison.  Thallium affects the heart, kidneys, liver and central nervous system.  (Handbook of Industrial Toxicology, E.R. Acute and Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  Rhinitis, difficulty breathing, chest pain.

Ingestion:  Metallic taste, garlic odor, gingivitis, stomatitis, salivation, excessive thirst, glossitis, jaundice, diarrhea.

Skin:  Erythema, dermatitis, dry scaly skin lesions, urticaria.

Eye:  Conjunctivitis.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory, liver, kidney and central nervous system diseases.

Carcinogenicity:  (Thallium is a suspected carcinogen.)    NTP:  No    IARC:  No  OSHA:  Yes (as thallium)

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.  Seek medical attention immediately.

INGESTION:  Administer 2 glasses of water, induce vomiting, and seek medical attention immediately.

SKIN:  Wash affected area with mild soap and lukewarm water, seek medical attention.

EYE:  Flush affected eye with lukewarm  water for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention immediately.

 

 

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Incompatible materials.

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid):  Acids, oxidizing agents, F2, Mg + H2, Al, H2SO4, P2O5.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Tl, Tl2O, Tl2O2.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

 

 

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.  Vacuum up spill with a high efficiency unit and place in a container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.  Insure that the spill area is isolated and well ventilated.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  Wear NIOSH-approved full face dust-mist-fume cartridge respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain exposure below TLV.  General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Neoprene

Eye Protection:  Safety goggles.

Other Protective Equipment:  Wear disposable protective apparel to prevent skin and clothing contamination.

 

 

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  HIGHLY TOXIC!!  Store dry in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry location away from incompatible materials.  Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before eating.  Daily showers are recommended if exposure may be high.

Other Precautions:  POISON.  VERY TOXIC BY INHALATION AND IF SWALLOWED.  DANGER OF CUMULATIVE EFFECTS.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
