Lithium Compounds: Acute toxicity of lithium salts is difficult to assess. Most poisonings have occurred over weeks to months of chronic intake, not from single ingestion episodes. Symptoms of milder toxicity include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, sedation, and fine tremor. The more serious effects involve the nervous system and include mental confusion, hyperreflexia, gross tremor, dysarthria, seizures, and cranial-nerve and focal neurological signs, progressing to coma and death.
Carbonates: The carbonate salts of most metals are insoluble in water. Any harmful effects associated with metal carbonate salts are from the metal rather than from the oxocarbon anion.
