11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Symptoms of Exposure: May cause rapid breathing, headache, vertigo, lack of motor coordination, weak pulse, cardiac arrhythmias, vomiting, stupor, convulsions, coma and death.
Acute and Chronic Effects:
Potassium Compounds: The toxicity of potassium compounds is almost always that of the anion, not of potassium.
Gold Compounds: Parenteral administration of therapeutic gold salts has been associated with toxic effects including irritation, rashes or blistering to skin and mucous membranes, allergic reactions, and damage to blood, kidneys, liver and lungs. Dermal and pulmonary effects are mainly associated with chrysotherapy and exposure by intramuscular or intravenous route. Generally gold compounds are poorly absorbed when ingested but may cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. No studies for inhalation exposure were found.
Cyanides: There are no qualitative differences in acute poisoning between cyanide compounds, since the cyanide ion is the common agent that primarily inhibits tissue cytochrome oxidase activity. Cyanides are well absorbed via ingestion, dermal or inhalation routes of exposure. Once absorbed, cyanide is rapidly and ubiquitously distributed throughout the body. The primary targets of cyanide toxicity in humans are the cardiovascular, respiratory, and central nervous systems. Massive doses may produce, without warning, sudden loss of consciousness and prompt death from respiratory arrest. With smaller but still lethal doses, the illness may be prolonged for 1 or more hours. Typical signs of acute cyanide poisoning include rapid breathing, headache, vertigo, lack of motor coordination, weak pulse, cardiac arrhythmias, vomiting, stupor, convulsions, and coma. A bright pink coloration of the skin due to high concentrations of oxyhemoglobin in venous blood may be confused with that of carbon monoxide poisoning.
