V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge, the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of palladium nitrate have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Palladium and palladium compounds have caused bone marrow, liver and kidney damage in experimental animals.  Other animal experiments indicate that it may interfere with the use of energy by nerves and muscles, induce lung malfunctions and produce abnormal fetuses.

Small doses of nitrates may cause weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.  Larger doses may cause dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, convulsions and collapse.

Acute and Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation.

Ingestion:  Large amounts of nitrates taken by mouth may have serious or even fatal results.  The symptoms are dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, convulsions and collapse.  Small, repeated doses of nitrates may lead to weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.  There is also some implication of increased cancer incidence among those exposed.

Skin:  Corrosive solid - skin irritant.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Target Organs:  Blood, central nervous system.

Carcinogenicity:  No data

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATIONRemove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTIONGive 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKINRemove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYEFlush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Conditions to Avoid:  Heat

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid):  Reducing agents, acids, bases, combustibles, organic solvents, oxidizers, NH3, Zn.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  NOx, palladium oxide.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or SpilledWear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Scoop up or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with all State, Federal and Local regulations.

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  NIOSH approved respirator.

VentilationUse local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure.  General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber gloves

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Storage and Handling: Keep container tightly closed.  Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after use.

Other Precautions:  Hygroscopic.  Store away from water/moisture.  Store in the dark.  Store away from air.  This substance is an oxidizer and the heat of its reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition.

Work PracticesImplement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
