Ingestion: Ingestion of large amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscular weakness and lack of coordination. May Irritate.

Effects of Overexposure for Lithium ion: Lithium is relatively non-toxic unless ingested in large amounts as reported in two NIOSH studies conducted at manufacturing locations (Health Hazard Evaluation Report HHE 80-036-922 and HHE 77-59-496). The NIOSH reports also state that lithium ion listed below are based on extensive studies of human ingestion of LiCl and Li2CO3 of amounts in excess of 0.5 grams/day.

 

Acute Exposure: Vomiting, diarrhea and ataxia may occur. Central nervous system effects including slurred speech, blurred vision, dizziness, sensory loss, convulsions and stupor have been reported.

 

Chronic Exposure: Neuromuscular effects such as tremor, ataxia, weakness, clonus and hyperactive reflexes may occur as a result of repeated exposure to lithium ion. Lithium ion can cause kidney damage, gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue, dehydration, weight loss, dermatological effects and thyroid disturbances. Animal studies conducted with rats and mice have shown lithium ion in high amounts to be teratogenic. Other studies conducted with rats, rabbits and monkeys have demonstrated no adverse effects on the developing fetus. Human data are ambiguous. The safety of lithium ion expose during pregnancy has not been established.

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

 

INGESTION: Drink plenty of water and induce vomiting, by touching back of throat with finger, or if available, by administering syrup of ipecac. Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Call a physician.

INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. If discomfort occurs and persists, obtain medical attention.

SKIN: Wash with soap and water. If irritation occurs and persists, obtain medical attention.

EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water for 15 minutes. If irritation occurs and persists seek medical attention.

 

NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Effects of oral overexposure to lithium ion are well documented in the medical literature. Low toxicity is anticipated, except with voluntary overexposure. In such cases, standard protocols for overexposure are suggested.
