IV. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS DATA
Flash Point: N/A
Autoignition Temperature: N/A
Explosion Limits: Lower: N/A Upper: N/A
Extinguishing Media: For solids, use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding material and type of fire. Powder fires should be extinguished with a class D extinguisher or other metal fire extinguishing agents.
Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Finely divided material such as dust, shavings, etc. may be combustible and may be ignited by heat, sparks, or flames. May burn rapidly with flare-burning effect. Fire may produce irritating or poisonous gases. High concentrations of airborne dust in an enclosed area can explode or burn if exposed to a source of ignition. Use of water on finely divided material may cause explosive hydrogen gas and heat to be evolved.
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
This product in the form it is sold is not considered to constitute a physical hazard or a health hazard. Subsequent operations such as abrading, melting, welding, cutting or processing in any other fashion may produce potentially hazardous dust or fumes which can be inhaled, swallowed, or come in contact with the skin or eyes.
Effects of Exposure: No toxic effects would be expected form exposure to the solid form of this specialty metal. Prolonged repeated exposure to fumes or dusts generated during heating, cutting, brazing or welding may or may not cause adverse health effects associated with the listed constituents in excess of OSHA permissible exposure limits. Important: Determine actual exposure by industrial hygienic monitoring.
Acute Effects:
Inhalation: Exposure to high concentrations of metallic fumes or dusts may result in irritation of the respiratory tract and/or sensitization of the lungs and other mucous membranes. Excessive inhalation of fumes from many metals can produce an acute reaction known as ‘metal fume fever’.
Ingestion: Ingestion of harmful amounts of product as distributed is unlikely due to its solid, insoluble form. Ingestion of dust may cause nausea and/or vomiting. Serious effects may occur if large amounts of dust are swallowed.
Skin: Exposure to dust may cause irritation or sensitization, possibly leading to dermatitis.
Eyes: Exposure to high concentrations of fumes or dusts may cause irritation and/or sensitization.
Chronic Effects:
Inhalation: May cause allergic sensitization and asthma, lung inflammation, pneumonitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, siderosis (benign lung disease caused by inhaling iron particles), diffuse pulmonary fibrosis, nasal perforation and nasal cavity damage.
Ingestion: Large or repeated doses may cause central nervous system damage, possibly permanent, liver damage, gout and inflammation of the joints.
Skin: May cause dermatitis.
Eyes: May cause eye inflammation.
Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OHSA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult, seek medical attention.
INGESTION: Seek medical attention immediately.
SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash contaminated area with soap and water. If a persistent rash or irritation occurs, seek medical attention.
EYE: Immediately flush with large amounts of water for several minutes, get medical attention.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Stable
Conditions to Avoid: Avoid creating finely divided, concentrated airborne particulates in the presence of ignition sources. Avoid contact with incompatible materials.
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Oxidizers. Reacts with strong acids to form explosive hydrogen gas and heat.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Metal oxide fume, hydrogen.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Sweep or scoop up. For powder spills: Wear respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Sweep or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust.
Waste Disposal Method: In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection: If fumes, misting or dust condition occurs and TLV as indicated in Section II is exceeded, provide NIOSH approved respirators.
Ventilation Requirements: General exhaust is recommended (to keep airborne concentration of dust and fumes below ACGIH-TLV's). Use local exhaust as required.
Eye Protection: Recommended approved safety glasses or goggles when working with dusty material.
Gloves: As required
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Adequate footwear and clothing that protects skin from prolonged or repeated contact. Change clothing if there is a reasonable probability of contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: No special storage precautions are required for material in solid form. Store in a cool, dry area.
Other Precautions: Avoid breathing of and contact with fumes and dusts during processing. Keep away from incompatible materials.
Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
DOT Regulations:
Hazard Class: None
The above information is believed to be correct, but does not purport to be all inclusive and shall be used only as a guide. ESPI shall not be held liable for any damage resulting from handling or from contact with the above product.
