Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard: When heated to decomposition, gallium iodide may emit toxic fumes of iodine and iodine compounds.

V           HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of gallium iodide have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Prolonged absorption of iodides may produce “iodism” which is manifested by skin rash, running nose, headache, and irritation of mucous membranes. In severe cases, the skin may show pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters. Weakness, anemia, loss of weight and general depression may occur. Generally very soluble in water and easily absorbed into the body.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. May cause irritation of the upper respiratory system, nose, lacrimation, headache and tight chest.

Ingestion: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE. May cause chemical burns to the mouth, gastric irritation, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Skin: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.

Eye: STRONG IRRITANT AND CORROSIVE.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation: May cause pneumonoconiosis and depression of bone marrow function.

Ingestion: May cause gastritis, degeneration of the liver and kidneys, growth retardation, anemia and spasms.

Skin: May cause depression of bone marrow function, dermatitis, rashes, pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters.

Eye: May cause visual impairment, including blindness.

Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ingestion, skin and eyes.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing respiratory, skin and gastric disorders.

Target Organs: May affect the respiratory system, liver, kidneys, skin and eyes.

Carcinogenicity: NTP: No           IARC: No          OSHA: No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek medical attention immediately.

INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.

SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing from affected area, brush material off skin. Wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately.

EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

VI         REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Conditions to Avoid: None

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): None recorded.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Fumes of iodine or iodine compounds.

Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII        SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Scoop or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with State, Federal and Local regulations.

VIII      SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust, mist, vapor cartridge respirator.

Ventilation: Handle in an inert gas such as argon in a controlled and enclosed process. Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels. General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves.                                                                        Eye Protection: Safety goggles

Other Protective Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX         SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry area. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Other Precautions: Gallium Iodide decomposes in water and moisture. Handle and store in a controlled environment and in an inert gas such as argon.

Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Handle in a controlled, inert atmosphere. Minimize exposure by using local exhaust and an enclosing process if/when possible. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Shower and change clothes at the end of workshift. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.

The above information is believed to be correct, but does not purport to be all inclusive and shall be used only as a guide. ESPI shall not be held liable for any damage resulting from handling or from contact with the above product.
