Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective equipment to prevent contact with skin and eyes.
Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Barium oxide is an oxidizer and its heat of reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition. Reacts violently with water. Exothermic reaction with water.
V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Effects of Exposure:
To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of barium peroxide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.
Barium compounds may cause severe gastroenteritis, including abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, tremors, faintness, paralysis of the arms and legs, and slow or irregular heartbeat. Severe cases may produce collapse and death due to respiratory failure. Soluble barium compounds are more likely to cause these effects than insoluble compounds. Inhalation of fumes may cause sore throat, coughing, labored breathing, and irritation of the respiratory tract as well as the above symptoms.
Acute and Chronic Effects: A mild irritation to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove from exposure, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult, seek immediate medical attention.
INGESTION: Give 1 to 2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek immediate medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SKIN: Remove any contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, flush with running water, wash carefully with soap and water. Seek medical advice.
EYES: Flush eyes, including under upper and lower eyelids, with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes. Consult a physician.
VI REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Stable
Conditions to Avoid: Heat and moisture.
Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Water/moisture, reducing agents, easily oxidized materials, organic materials, hydrogen sulfide, acids, metal powders, aluminum, aluminum alloys, magnesium.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Barium and barium oxide fume
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur
VII SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust.
Waste Disposal Method: In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.
VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust-fume-mist if dust or fumes are being generated.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels. Handle in an inert gas such as argon in a controlled and enclosed process.
Protective Gloves: Impervious gloves
Eye Protection: Safety glasses
Other protective Equipment: Normal laboratory wear.
IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Do not breathe dust, mist, vapor or gas. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Store in tightly closed containers. Keep from contact with clothing and other combustible materials. Empty container may contain hazardous residues.
Other Precautions: Handle and store under dry, inert gas. This product can reduce the ignition temperature of flammable substances. This substance is an oxidizer and its heat of reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition. Store away from flammable substances. Store away from reducing agents. Store away from water/moisture.
Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
