Flash Point: N/A                                                                                                    Autoignition Temperature: N/E

Explosion Limits: Lower: N/E     Upper: N/E

Extinguishing Media: Use dry chemical, CO2, DO NOT USE WATER!

Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters must wear a full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Explodes on contact with H2O2, (KNO3 + S). May explode on contact with oxidizing materials. When heated to decomposition emits highly toxic fumes of SO2, H2S and arsenic. Reacts with water or steam to produce toxic, flammable and explosive vapors of H2S.

V           HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of arsenic sulfide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Acute arsenic poisoning (from ingestion) results in marked irritation of the stomach and intestines with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases the vomitus and stools are bloody and the patient goes into collapse and shock with weak, rapid pulse, cold sweats, coma and death. Chronic arsenic poisoning (from ingestion or inhalation) may disturb the digestive system with symptoms of loss of appetite, cramps, nausea, constipation or diarrhea.

Sulfides show variable toxicity. The alkaline sulfides are similar in action to alkalies. They cause irritation of the skin and are corrosive by ingestion. The heavy metal sulfides are generally insoluble and show little toxic action except through the liberation of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, if generated, is toxic, a severe irritant and flammable. Effects include conjunctivitis, headache, nausea, dizziness, coughing, pulmonary edema and possibly death.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation: H2S is highly irritating to the respiratory tract and may cause pulmonary edema. Exposure to high concentrations affects central nervous system and may be fatal. Arsenic compounds can cause lung cancer. May be corrosive due to evolutions of H2S on contact with moisture.

Ingestion: May cause vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.

Skin: Arsenic compounds can cause itching, pigmentation and cancer of the skin. May be corrosive due to evolution of H2S contact with moisture.

Eye: H2S is highly irritating to eyes and can cause conjunctivitis.

Primary Routes of Entry: Inhalation and ingestion

Medical Conditions Possibly Aggravated: Respiratory disorders

Carcinogenicity: Arsenic: NTP: Yes        IARC Monographs: Yes               OSHA Regulated: Yes

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove from exposure, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek immediate medical attention.

INGESTION: Give 1-2 cups of milk or water, DO NOT Induce vomiting. Immediately call a physician.

SKIN: Brush off skin and wash area with soap and water. Seek medical attention.

EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

VI         REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Conditions to avoid: Heat, moisture, incompatible materials.

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Water, acid or acid fumes, oxidizing materials, H2O2, (KNO3 + S).

Hazardous Decomposition Products: H2S, As2O3, As

Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur

VII        SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Wear a self contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Isolate the area where the spill occurred, insure proper ventilation is available and that water/moisture are kept out of the area. Vacuum up the spill using a high efficiency unit and place in a container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations.

VIII      SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust-mist-fume respirator

Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain below TLV for As2S3. Keep under dry atmosphere. Mechanical exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves: Neoprene

Eye Protection: Safety Glasses

Other Clothing and Equipment: Wear protective clothing to prevent contamination of skin and clothes.

IX         SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Other Handling and Storage Conditions: Store in tightly closed containers, in a cool, dry area. Store under dry atmosphere. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before meals.

Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
