PLATINUM (Pt)

 

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

Characteristics: Silvery white ductile metal. Insoluble in mineral and organic acids, soluble in aqua regia. Attacked by fused alkalies. Does not corrode or tarnish. Heated platinum absorbs large volumes of hydrogen. It is also a strong complexing agent. As a catalyst it is abnormally sensitive to poisons. Nontoxic.

Hazards: Flammable in powdered form. Soluble salts are highly toxic by inhalation. Tolerance (as Pt), 0.002 mg/m3 of air.
