MATERIAL
OVERVIEW
Characteristics:
Very soft silvery metal. Mohs hardness 0.6. Viscosity
of liquid lithium less than water, heat capacity about
the same as water. Reacts exothermally with nitrogen
in moist air at room temperature. High electrical
conductivity. Soluble in liquid ammonia.
Hazards:
Ignites in air near melting point. Dangerous fire and
explosion risk when exposed to water, nitrogen, acids
or oxidizing agents. Extinguish fires with chemical
only. Lithium ion is toxic to central nervous system.
