The machining and grinding characteristics of Densalloy are very similar to those of hard grey cast iron. Being non-porous, standard water soluble coolants may be used if desired, but are not required. The use of single point carbide tools is generally recommended and excellent finishes to close tolerances are readily achieved. The depth of cut and chip formation depicted in the various machining operations are performed by conventional machining methods.
The Following Are Suggested Guidelines Only: Turning and Boring: Carbide tipped tools - rounded nose. Roughing: Depth of cut .030"- .060" Feed: .008"-.015" Speed: 200-300 sfm (surface feet per minute) Finishing: Depth of cut .002"-.010" Feed: .002"-.005" Speed: 300-500 sfm. No coolant required. Milling and Shaping: Light feeds and bevelled edges recommended to minimize break out. Drilling and Tapping: High speed steel drills and taps may be used. Through holes recommended. Material must be firmly held. Hand feed-lubricant or cutting oil acceptable. Grinding and Lapping: Medium hard, vitrified bond, aluminum oxide, silicon carbide or diamond wheels may be used. Use of ample coolant is suggested. Joining: Material may be silver brazed, or copper brazed in hydrogen atmosphere. |
