MATERIAL OVERVIEWAluminum (Al) is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal that is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon) and makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's crust. Aluminum forms a microscopically thin (~4 nm thick) protective oxide coating on exposure to air or water, which makes it highly resistant to ordinary corrosion. Aluminum is a component in over 270 different minerals. The primary ore used in the production of aluminum metal is bauxite. Aluminum is among the most electrically conductive metals. Along with its light weight, strength and corrosion resistance, this makes it a good choice for electrical applications. Aluminum wire is increasingly popular for electrical wiring and in utility grid transmission and distribution networks. Aluminum has a superior conductivity to weight ratio compared with copper and is being used for wiring in appliances, residences, aircraft, and buildings. Because aluminum does not spark, it is important for electrical applications in industries where sparking can have catastrophic consequences. ESPI specializes in small research and prototype quantities of pure aluminum wire and rod in diameters ranging from 0.001” (.025mm) to more than 1” (25mm). We carry many standard diameters but can draw aluminum to just about any diameter and tolerance you need. GENERAL PROPERTIES
