Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  Tetraaminepalladium II Nitrate solution may evolve ammonia and nitrous oxide gases during decomposition.  The isolated salt can explode when exposed to high heat or flames.  Use normal firefighting procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing; hats, boots and gloves.  If without risk, remove material from fire area.  Cool container with water from maximum distance.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

Small, repeated doses of nitrates may lead to weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.  There is also some implication of increases cancer incidence among those exposed.

In experimental animals, palladium compounds have produced damage to bone marrow, liver and kidneys.  In the laboratory, it appears to bind to many cell components, blocks the action of enzymes, interferes with the use of energy by nerved and muscles, induces lung malfunction and produces abnormal fetuses.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation or burns.

Ingestion:  May cause burning pain in mouth, throat and stomach.  May cause vomiting and diarrhea.  Large amounts of nitrates taken by mouth may have serious or even fatal results.  The symptoms are dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weakness, convulsions and collapse.

Skin:  May cause irritation or burns.

Eye:  May cause irritation or burns.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, flood skin with large amounts of water.  If irritation persists seek medical attention.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Keep tightly closed.  Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after use.

Other Precautions:  Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls, eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing.

Warning:  May irritate skin, eyes, lungs.
