V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of strontium oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Strontium compounds have a low order of toxicity. It is chemically and biologically similar to calcium. The oxides and hydroxides are moderately caustic materials. High doses of strontium have caused changes in blood clotting factors, adrenal function, and liver function.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation and burning to the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract.

Ingestion:  May cause vomiting, diarrhea, and colic.

Skin:  Contact may cause caustic burns to skin and irritation to mucous membranes.

EyeContact may cause caustic burns to eyes and irritation to mucous membranes.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause pulmonary edema.

Ingestion:  No chronic effects recorded.

Skin:  May cause dermatitis.

Eye:  No chronic effects recorded.

Target Organs:  No data

Medical Conditions Possibly Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory disorders.

CarcinogenicityNTP:  No    OSHA:  No    IARC:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of water or milk and induce vomiting, seek medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical attention.

EYE:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Reacts with air to form SrCO3.  Reacts with water to form Sr(OH)2 and heat.

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid):  Acids, oxidizing agents, water/moisture. Reacts rapidly with mineral acids generating heat.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Metal oxide fume.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Keep unprotected persons away. Scoop up or vacuum up spill using a HEPA filter and transfer to a sealed container for further handling and disposal. Do not flush to sewer, stream, or other bodies of water. Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  Consult state, local or federal EPA regulations for proper disposal.

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  NIOSH approved dust respirator.

Ventilation:  Handle in a controlled, enclosed environment in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure. General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves.

Eye Protection:  Safety goggles

Other Protective Equip:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling And Storage:  Store in a cool, dry area. Store in a tightly sealed container. Wash thoroughly after handling. Store away from acid in airtight containers.

Other Precautions:  Handle and store under dry protective gas such as argon. Protect from water or moisture.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
