V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of terbium oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.  Lanthanons can cause delayed blood clotting leading to hemorrhages.  Exposure may also lead to sensitivity to heat, itching, increased awareness of odor and taste, and liver damage.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation.

Ingestion:  May be harmful, effects not known.

Skin Contact:  May cause irritation.

Eye Contact:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:  None known

Medical Conditions Aggravated by the Chemical:  None known.

Other Health Hazards:  As a lanthanon, terbium oxide may impair blood coagulation.

Most Likely Routes of Entry:  Ingestion.

 

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Supply fresh air, keep warm and quiet, provide artificial respiration and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Seek medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, flood skin with large amounts of water.  If irritation persists seek medical attention.

EYE:  Immediately flush eyes, including under eyelids, with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.  Call a physician.

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Keep container tightly closed.  Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after use.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Use lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls, eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing.
