Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard:  Aluminum oxide may have an exothermic reaction, above 200 oC, with halocarbon vapors and may produce toxic hydrochloric acid and phosgene.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Over Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of aluminum oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Aluminum may be implicated in Alzheimers disease. Inhalation of aluminum containing dusts may cause pulmonary disease.  Aluminum oxide has caused tumors and neoplasms in experimental animals via implant.

Aluminum compounds have many commercial uses and are commonly found in industry.  Many of these materials are active chemically and thus exhibit dangerous toxic and reactive properties.  Inhalation of fine aluminum oxide particles is associated with shaver's disease.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition)

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  Dust may cause irritation of the nose throat, accompanied by cough and discomfort.  Dust may cause upper respiratory tract irritation with discomfort of nose and throat.  Aluminum oxide does not cause pneumonoconiosis in man.

Ingestion:  No acute health effects recorded.

Skin:  No acute health effects recorded.

Eye:   Dust may cause eye irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  Inhalation of finely divided dust may cause lung damage affecting breathing capacity.  No other chronic health effects recorded.

Medical Conditions Aggravated By Overexposure:  Pre-existing respiratory disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal waste disposal regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  If excessive dusting, wear NIOSH or MSHA approved respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels.  General exhaust is not recommended.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to be taken in Handling and Storing:  Store in cool, dry place in tightly closed containers.  When machining product, avoid dusting and use with adequate ventilation.  Do not take internally.  Wash thoroughly after handling.  Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas.

Other Handling and Storage Conditions:  Do not store together with acids.  Do not store together with alkalies (caustic solutions).  Store away from oxidizing agents.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
