Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes.  Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:  When heated to decomposition, molybdenum diboride may emit toxic metal oxide fumes.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Over Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the acute and chronic toxicity of molybdenum diboride has not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Acute molybdenum poisoning may cause severe gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, coma and death from cardiac failure.  Chronic molybdenum poisoning in laboratory animals has caused loss of weight, anorexia, anemia, deficient lactation, male sterility, osteoporosis and bone joint abnormalities.

Boron affects the central nervous system.  Boron poisoning causes depression of the circulation, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, followed by profound shock and coma.  The temperature may become subnormal and a scarlatina form rash may cover the entire body.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system and boron poisoning.

Ingestion:  May cause boron poisoning and acute molybdenum poisoning.

Skin:  May cause irritation.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause pneumoconiosis.

Ingestion:  May affect the central nervous system and cause chronic molybdenum poisoning.

Skin:  May cause dermatitis.

Eye:  No chronic health effects reported.

Target Organs:  May affect the lungs, bones, spleen, central nervous system, and heart. 

Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory and skin disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult.  Seek medical immediate medical attention.

INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. 

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Keep unprotected persons away.  Ensure adequate ventilation.  Sweep up, place in a bag and hold for waste disposal.  Avoid raising dust.  Use sand or vermiculite.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with all State, Federal and Local regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator when high concentrations are present.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels.  General exhaust is recommended.

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber gloves.

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective work clothing

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Keep container tightly sealed.  Store in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers.  Ensure good ventilation at the workplace.  Open and handle container with care.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
