V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Over Exposure:  Inhalation of insoluble barium compounds has been reported to cause benign pneumoconiosis with no specific symptoms and no changes in pulmonary function.  Exposure to lead compounds is known to have adverse effects on a number of organ systems.  The chief effects of lead poisoning in the industrial setting are anemia, nervous system effects (Psychic and neurological disorders) and kidney injury.  However, the chemical inertness and insolubility of this material is expected to reduce the potential for systemic lead toxicity.

Route(s) of Entry:  Material can be inhaled, swallowed or come in contact with the skin or eyes.

Carcinogenic Assessment:  This material has not been identified as a known or suspected carcinogen by NTP, IARC or OSHA.

 

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

EYES:  If irritation occurs, flush with copious amounts of water.  If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

SKIN:  If irritation occurs, thoroughly wash affected area with mild soap and water and prevent further contact.  If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

INHALATION:  If irritation or symptoms of pulmonary involvement develop, remove from exposure and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  If substantial quantities are swallowed, give person (if conscious) a large quantity of water to drink, induce vomiting and seek medical attention.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Ventilate area of spill.  Clean-up using methods which avoid dust generation such as vacuuming (with appropriate filter to prevent airborne dust levels which exceed the PEL or TLV).  Wet dust mop or wet clean-up.  If airborne dust is generated, use an appropriate NIOSH approved respirator.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with applicable government regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  Use a appropriate NIOSH approved respirator if airborne dust concentrations exceed the TLV or PEL.  All appropriate requirements set forth in 29 CFR 1910.134 should be met.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust ventilation which is adequate to limit personal exposure to levels which do not exceed the TLV or PEL.  If such equipment is not available, use respirators as specified above.

Protective Gloves:  Gloves are recommended when prolonged or repeated contact is likely.

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses or goggles are recommended.

Other Protective Equipment/Work Practices:  N/A

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Maintain good housekeeping procedures to prevent accumulation of dust.  Use clean-up methods which minimize dust generation such as vacuuming or wet clean-up.  If airborne dust is generated, use an appropriate NIOSH approved respirator.

Other Precautions:  Wash thoroughly after handling and before eating or smoking and at the end of the work shift.  Do not shake clothing or other items to remove dust.  Use a vacuum.  Avoid dust inhalation and direct skin contact.  Do not ingest.  The OSHA Lead standard (29CFR 1910.1025) should be consulted and all applicable requirements met.
