V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of gadolinium nitrate have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Gadolinium is considered a rare earth metal.  These metals are moderately to highly toxic.  The symptoms of toxicity of the rare earth elements include writhing, ataxia, labored respiration, walking on the toes with arched back, and sedation.  The rare earth elements exhibit low toxicity by ingestion exposure.  May lead to production of skin and lung granulomas.

Small doses of nitrates may cause weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.  Larger doses may cause dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, convulsions and collapse.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  Due to its acidity, this product may cause difficulty breathing, chronic bronchitis, chemical pneumonitis, or emphysema.  Symptoms may be delayed 4-30 hours.

Ingestion:  Low toxicity by ingestion.  Due to its acidity, this product may burn the mouth, throat and stomach.

Skin:  Slight skin irritation.

Eye:  Severe eye irritant.

Chronic Effects:

Nitrates, in general, are not a direct toxicant but are a health hazard because of their conversion to nitrites which in turn cause methemoglobinemia.

Medical Conditions Aggravated by Overexposure:  Skin and respiratory disease; blood disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove from area of exposure.  If not breathing, give artificial respiration.  If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.  GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION!!!

INGESTION:  GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION.  DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.  If conscious give large quantities of water.

SKIN:  In case of contact, immediately wash with soap and plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.  Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.  Thoroughly clean contaminated clothing and shoes before reuse.  Get medical attention if irritation develops or persists.

EYES:  In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes using an eyewash fountain.  Lift upper and lower lids and rinse well under them.  Get immediate medical attention, preferably an eye specialist.

 

 

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid):  Reducing agents, strong bases, combustible materials, high concentrations of organic matter.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Toxic oxides of nitrogen are released at decomposition temperatures.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur

 

 

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate protective gear.  Sweep up into appropriate container for disposal or recovery.  Avoid creating dusting conditions.  Ventilate area.  Clean spill area with a soda ash slurry and sweep into a drum for disposal.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved respirator.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below the PEL, TLV.  General exhaust is recommended.

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber gloves.

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Oxidizer.  Severe eye and mucous membrane irritant.  Store in tightly closed containers at ambient temperatures.  Do not store near strong reducing agents or organic materials (ie.  paper or wood).  Wash thoroughly after handling.  Change contaminated clothing promptly and launder before reuse.  Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing.  Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas.  Keep container closed.  Keep away from hear, sparks and open flames.  Empty container may contain hazardous residues.

Other Precautions:  Dry powder can build static electricity charges when subjected to the friction of conveying, mixing or sliding.  To prevent ignition, provide adequate precautions, such as electrical grounding, or inert atmospheres when material is used in the presence of flammable materials.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
