Fight larger fires with water spray or alcohol resistant foam. Special Firefighting Procedures: No special firefighting procedures needed. Use normal procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing, hats, boots, and gloves. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazard: In case of fire, the following can be released: hydrogen iodide
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION Effects of Exposure: To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of europium iodide have not been thoroughly investigated and reported. Lanthanons can cause delayed blood clotting leading to hemorrhages. Exposure may also lead to sensitivity to heat, itching, increased awareness of odor and taste, and liver damage. Prolonged exposure to iodides may cause skin rash, running nose, headache and irritation of the mucous membranes. In severe cases the skin may show pimples, boils, redness, black and blue spots, hives and blisters. Iodides are readily diffused across the placenta. Acute Effects: Inhalation: May cause irritation. Ingestion: May be harmful, effects not known Skin: May cause irritation. Eye: May cause irritation. Chronic Effects: No data Medical Conditions, If Any, Aggravated by the Chemical: None Known
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek medical attention immediately. INGESTION: No data. Seek medical attention immediately. SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, wash with mild soap and water. If irritation persists seek medical attention. EYE: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes raising upper and lower eyelids. Seek medical attention.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA Stability: Stable Conditions to Avoid: Light, water/moisture Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Water/moisture Hazardous Decomposition Products: Hydrogen iodide Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Scoop up or Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Take care not to raise dust. Waste Disposal Method: In accordance with Local, State and Federal EPA regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved respirator. Ventilation: Handle in a controlled, enclosed environment in an inert gas such as argon. Use local exhaust to maintain low levels of exposure. General exhaust is not recommended. Eye Protection: Safety glasses. Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves. Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Keep container tightly closed. Store in cool, dry conditions in well sealed containers. Store in the dark. Store and handle under dry inert gas. This product is hygroscopic. Protect from humidity and water. Wash thoroughly after use. Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Handle in a controlled, inert atmosphere. Minimize exposure by using local exhaust and an enclosing process if/when possible. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing. RCRA Code: None TSCA Registered: No
