11   TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Symptoms of Exposure: May cause irritation to eyes and abraded skin. May cause irritation to lungs.

Acute and Chronic Effects:

Aluminum: There is strong evidence that aluminum (compounds) can cause irritation following exposure via either inhalation or injection. Modest evidence of an effect exists for reproductive toxicity following oral exposure, for neurological toxicity following either oral or injection exposure, and for bone toxicity following injection exposure. All other effects were judged to be supported by either limited evidence or no clear evidence at all.1

Tunsten Cogmpounds: Respiratory effects were reported in workers who were occupationally exposed to airborne dusts containing tungsten trioxide, tungsten dioxide, metallic tungsten, and tungsten carbide in areas where high tensile strength tungsten (hard metal) was prepared. It is generally believed that the health effects observed in hard metal workers are the result of exposure to cobalt or other metals, not tungsten. In a study with rats, it was demonstrated that intratracheally-instilled tungsten carbide and cobalt in combination, but not alone, induced interstitial pulmonary fibrosis. Acute oral exposure to tungsten does not appear to be a particular toxicity concern, based on acute oral LD50 values ranging from 240 to 11,300 mg/kg/day for several soluble tungsten compounds. No human data were located in which systemic toxicity could be associated with oral exposure to tungsten or tungsten compounds. Signs of slight conjunctival irritation were noted in rabbits following single ocular instillation of 100 mg of sodium tungstate dihydrate powder or tungsten metal powder.
