Extinguishing Media:  Not considered combustible except in powder form.  If material involved in a fire use dry powder extinguishing agents, dry sand, carbon dioxide, DO NOT USE WATER.

Special Firefighting Procedures:  Firefighters must wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus, protective clothing, boots and gloves.  If without risk, remove material from fire area.  Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution. 

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards:  Flammable and moderately explosive in the form of dust or powder when exposed to flame.  Dust may be pyrophoric in air and may explode when heated in carbon dioxide  Mixtures of aluminum dust and manganese dust may explode in air.  Mixtures with ammonium nitrate may explode when heated.  May ignite on contact with fluorine, chlorine + heat, hydrogen peroxide, bromine pentafluoride, sulfur dioxide + heat.  Violent reaction with NO2 + oxidants.  Incandescent reaction with phosphorus, nitryl fluoride, and nitric acid.  Will react with water or steam to produce hydrogen.  Manganese may react with oxidizing agents as well.

 

 

V.  HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the physical, chemical and toxicological properties of manganese have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Some manganese compounds are experimental tumorigens.  They can cause central nervous and pulmonary system damage by inhalation of fumes and dust.  Very few poisonings have occurred from ingestion.  Chronic manganese poisoning is a clearly characterized disease which results from inhalation of fumes or dusts of manganese.  The central nervous system is the chief site of damage.  Exposure to dusts and fumes can possibly increase the incidence of upper respiratory infections and pneumonia (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  Inhalation of manganese compounds is considered the primary route of exposure.  It may cause irritation of the respiratory tract and mucous membranes.  Inhalation of manganese compounds, fine dusts and fumes may cause metal fume fever.

Ingestion:  Absorption of manganese compounds from the gastrointestinal tract is poor under normal conditions.

Skin:  May cause irritation, moderately toxic by subcutaneous route.

Eye:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  Chronic inhalation of manganese compounds, dust particles, approximately 3 um in size, for a period of a few months may cause pulmonary pneumonitis.  However, dust particles approximately 5 um in size, inhaled for about 4 hours daily for three months did not produce pneumonitis, but may cause fibrotic changes in the lungs, decrease in hemoglobin and a change in erythrocyte levels.  Manganese compounds may also cause manganism, psychic and neurological disorders affecting the central nervous system, to develop (manganism is not fatal but can cause permanent disability).

Ingestion:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Skin:  May cause dermatitis.

Eye:  Irritant dusts may cause conjunctivitis damage.

Routes of Entry:  Inhalation

Target Organs:  May affect the central nervous system, kidneys, respiratory system and liver.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  It has been recorded that when exposed to manganese dust and fumes, there is a higher incidence of upper respiratory infection and pneumonia compared to the general population.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air.  Keep victim warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult.  Seek medical attention immediately. 

INGESTION:  No data.  Contact a physician.

SKIN:  Remove any contaminated clothing, brush material off of skin, flush with running water, wash carefully with soap and water.  Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

EYE:  Flush with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

VII.  SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area, provide ventilation and extinguish sources of ignition.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.  Use non-sparking tools.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

 

 

VIII.  SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator for hazardous dusts and mists or self-contained breathing apparatus.

Ventilation:  (Powder) Use local exhaust to maintain exposure below TLV.  Handle in a dry, inert, controlled environment.  Handle under argon.  General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Neoprene

Eye Protection:  Safety Glasses

Other Protective Equipment:  Wear protective clothing to prevent contamination of skin and clothes.

 

 

IX.  SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Store in a cool, dry area.  Store in tightly sealed container.  Manganese metal will react with water or steam.  Handle and store in a controlled environment and inert gas such as argon.  Avoid breathing dust.  Wash thoroughly after handling.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
