Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard:  When heated to decomposition graphite may emit carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

V.  HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of graphite have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

The inhalation of graphite, both natural and synthetic, has caused pneumoconiosis in exposed workers.  The pneumoconiosis found is similar to coal worker's pneumoconiosis.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  Inhalation of dust or powder may cause irritation to the respiratory system.

Ingestion:  None recorded.

Skin:  May cause mild irritation.

Eye:  May be irritating to the eyes.

Chronic Effects:  Inhalation of finely divided powder may cause pneumoconiosis and anthracosilicosis.  No other chronic health effects recorded.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing asthma and emphysema conditions.

Carcinogenicity:   NTP:  No     IARC:  No     OSHA:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water.  Seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with soap and water.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYE:  Flush eyes, incluiding under upper and lower eyelids, with lukewarm water.  If irritation or redness develop, seek medical attention.

VI.  REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  None

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid):  Avoid contact with oxidizing agents, halogens, acids, chlorine trifluoride, fluorine, potassium, potassium superoxide, cesium and rubidium.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

VII.  SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Remove ignition sources.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Sweep or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal Waste Disposal Regulations.

VIII.  SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  Wear NIOSH approved respirator in dusting conditions.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentrations at or below PEL, TLV.  General exhaust is recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Not normally required.  If dusts are expected to be generated, the use of protective gloves is advised to prevent skin contact and possible irritation.

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.  SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Store in a cool, dry area.  Store in a tightly sealed container.  Wash thoroughly after handling.

Other Precautions:  Do not store together with oxidizers, halogens, and acids.  Powders: Fumes can combine with air to form an explosive mixture.  Protect from electrostatic charge and sources of ignition.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
