V.  HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of gallium-indium-tin eutectic have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Gallium and gallium compounds may cause metallic taste, skin rashes and depression of bone marrow function as well as anorexia, nausea and vomiting.  Large doses may cause hemorrhagic nephritis.

Exposure to indium compounds may cause pain in the joints and bones, tooth decay, nervous and gastrointestinal disorders, heart pain and general debility.  Experiments with animals also indicate that indium may cause reduced food and water consumption with weight loss, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, blood, liver and kidney damage, leg paralysis and damage to the brain, heart, adrenals and spleen.

Tin metal dust/fumes and inorganic tin compounds may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation and pneumoconiosis.  Most inorganic tin compounds are poorly absorbed by the body when ingested or inhaled.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  No inhalation hazards of gallium-indium-tin eutectic have been identified.  Good industrial hygiene practice suggests limiting exposure to all respirable particulates.

Ingestion:  Evidence suggests low toxicity potential due to poor absorption by the oral route.

Skin:  May cause irritation.  Some sources suggest gallium may cause dermatitis, although patch testing humans with  metallic gallium did not cause a positive reaction.

Eye:  May cause eye irritation.

Chronic Effects:  Intravenous administration of gallium to humans caused metallic taste, skin rashes and bone marrow  depression as well as anorexia, nausea and vomiting.  May cause damage to kidneys.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Overexposure:  No data found.

CarcinogenicityIARC:  No             NTP:  No               ACGIH:  No          OSHA:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult, seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of mik or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with soap and water, seek medical attention if symptoms develop or persist.

EYE:  Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes using an eyewash fountain.  Lift upper  and lower lids and rinse well under them.  Get medical attention if irritation develops of persists.

VI.  REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  None listed.

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid):  Oxidizing agents, acids, halogens, alkali metals, interhalogens, chlorine, bromine, metals.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Toxic fumes generated during decomposition.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

Other Dangerous Reactions:  Corrodes aluminum, contact with alkali releases flammable gases.

Other Conditions to Avoid:  May have an alloying effect with metal surfaces such as copper, tin, lead, zinc, gold and silver.

VII.  SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill are and provide ventilation.  Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust), and place in a closed container for proper disposal.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations.

VIII.  SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  Use a NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying respirator with appropriate cartridge.

Ventilation:  Provide adequate ventilation.  Use local exhaust as needed to maintain airborne exposure below control limits.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.  SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Store in cool dry place, in tightly sealed containers.  Do not store together with acids.  Store away from oxidizing agents.  Store away from halogens.  Do not store together with interhalogens.  Reacts with alkali metals.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.

WARNING STATEMENTS:  CORROSIVE TO LIGHT ALLOYS AND METALS ESPECIALLY ALUMINUM ALLOYS.  MAY CAUSE SKIN AND EYE IRRITATION.
